eCertify enables Fonterra to increase profits and productivity by processing trade documentation electronically.

Exporters and Freight Forwarders searching for cost savings and efficiency gains are well advised to use eCertify, the online solution adopted by progressive Chambers of Commerce that transforms the costly and inefficient paper-based process for stamping and signing of Certificate of Origin into a streamlined electronic system.

Fonterra Documentation Centre Manager Clyde Fletcher, estimates that eCertify is providing the company with considerable cost savings that amount to over NZ$250,000 p.a.

He attributes these savings to the elimination of time consuming and inefficient manual paper-based processes, including the use of couriers, that were previously associated with the certification of Fonterra’s trade documentation by Chambers of Commerce. Fonterra, the world’s leading exporter of dairy products that is responsible for more than a third of international dairy trade, has long been an industry innovator searching for smarter and more effective ways of managing complex international trade processes to increase productivity, while reducing costs.

Since 1989, the company has successfully implemented information technology to transform its business practices so that it could support growing global operations and provide superior customer service. Back then, the company employed 32 staff in its Trade Documentation Centre to process 6,000 transactions each year. Today, Fonterra employs 28 document processing staff to process up to 40,000 transactions and up to 120,000 document sets each year.

Because every document set includes foundation trade documents such as a Certificate of Origin and Commercial Invoice that need to be certified, it should come as no surprised that this forward thinking company seized an opportunity to process these documents electronically – becoming one of the first companies in the world to embrace the eCert Direct solution when it was launched.

Fonterra Trade Documentation Specialists Manager Rachael Ireland said, “Over 78% of all Fonterra’s ex-New Zealand processes are now managed using electronic methods. eCertify has helped the company advance its journey by over 10% towards a goal of 100% electronic inputs and outputs by enabling us to electronically process trade documents in Australia and New Zealand. This capability will soon extend to the United States.”

“We are delighted with the results. eCertify provides exporters and export document authenticators, such as a Chamber of Commerce, with a low cost, easy to implement, scalable and user-friendly electronic solution.”

Rachael said that eCertify and Fonterra share a common vision for thinking strategically and acting proactively to advance sustainable and cost effective e-trade document solutions that remove impediments to efficient international trade around the globe.

The companies are now working in partnership to encourage other Chambers of Commerce, Embassies and Consulates to adopt the eCertify platform to increase efficiencies and certification turnaround times.
